Sister Miriam Patricia Gliatto

Sister Miriam of the Precious Blood, O.P. (Patricia Gliatto), 89, was born on January 25, 1937, in Chicago, IL. She died on March 19, 2026, at the Monastery of the Infant Jesus in Lufkin, TX. She was the third child of Leonard Anthony Gliatto and Florence A. Daly. She attended St. Lucy grade school in Chicago, IL; Trinity High School and Dominican College, River Forest, IL, for one year of piano. She received her Bachelor of Science Nursing studying at St. Teresa College-Mayo Clinic Nursing in Winona, MN and St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, MN. Sister retained her nursing license for most of her adult life. She worked summers at Chicago Continental Insurance Company and then, after becoming a RN, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN, on the nursing staff. Feeling drawn to the missionary life but also contemplative prayer, Sister originally entered Maryknoll in 1958 with the hopes of joining their cloister but was advised to become a contemplative nun. She joined St. Dominic’s Monastery in La Crosse, WI, on October 3, 1960, making her first profession of vows on May 1, 1962, and her Solemn Profession of vows on November 21, 1967. While in the monastery, Sister did some graduate studies at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, NY, in the summer of 1966. Never losing her missionary heart, Sister Miriam helped at Corpus Christi Dominican Monastery in Karen, Nairobi, Kenya from 1978-1981. In 1981, she asked to transfer to the Monastery of the Infant Jesus in Lufkin, TX. In 1999, she acted as one of the original foundresses of Queen of Peace Monastery, now in Upper Squamish Valley, British Columbia, Canada, serving as that monastery’s first vicaress for two years before returning to Lufkin. Sister held various positions in the different monasteries she was in: Infirmarian, Extern Sister, bursar, spiritual director. In Lufkin, she acted as sacristan, served in the Guild Department answering correspondence and was librarian. A skilled pianist, she also accompanied the liturgy on the organ. Sister is preceded in death by her parents and brother Leonard Anthony Gliatto, Jr. She is survived by her beloved sister, Jeanne Ann Buckon of Crozet, VA, and many nephews and nieces and great-nephews and great-nieces. Rosary for Sister Miriam will be held at the Monastery Chapel at 7:00 PM, Monday, March 23, 2026. The funeral Mass with be celebrated by the Most Rev. John Gregory Kelly at 9:30 AM on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, with internment in the Monastery cemetery immediately following the Mass. Pallbearers will be Mark Buckon, Peter Zapata, David Bomer, John Poskey, Tim Healy, and Jesus Reyes, Jr.
